Abstract

This study examines the extent to which European mobile service providers are attempting to manage their environmental impact. It goes on to examine some of the environmental management solutions available to mobile service providers, how they can best be implemented, and the benefits they may deliver. Finally, the report examines the recent environmental management performance and initiatives of selected European service providers.

The information provided in this study is essential reading for mobile operators, handset vendors, and any other players in the mobile market that are interested in understanding the drivers behind the creation of environmental management policies.

Rosie Secchi, senior analyst for IDC's European Wireless and Mobile Communications research believes that mobile operators are in a reasonably strong position when it comes to claiming credibility as green enterprises. Their overall impact is low when compared with large companies in industries, and the communications solutions they provide can counterbalance negative impacts by reducing the need for emissions-producing travel.
