Abstract

This IDC Insight provides an overview of the announcements made by Intel at its annual Intel Developer Forum (IDF), held in San Francisco, from August 18 to 21, 2008. It outlines the key points relating to Intel's expansion of its product line into new market segments, looking to expand its ecosystem in the embedded, mobile handheld, and networked consumer electronics — in addition to improving its presence in the scalable x86 server space (servers with four or more sockets). It analyzes the impact of these announcements on the overall marketplace, for which Intel is a key provider of platform technology, even as it continues to compete closely with AMD's moves in some of the same market segments — and with incumbent vendors in some of the consumer-oriented market spaces Intel is entering.

Additional insights regarding Intel's strategy and its future products, as discussed at IDF, will be provided by individual IDC services, which will publish research documents focusing on specific market segments.
