Abstract

This IDC study provides a bottom-up sizing of and 2008–2012 forecasts for the online gaming subscription market in 2007. Historical and forecast revenue data is shown for the ASEAN market (comprising the Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam). This study also contains vendor-specific revenue and market shares by country.

"The online gaming in the Southeast Asia region continued to pick up pace in 2007, attracting more foreign investments from the comparatively saturated North Asia gaming region. Further movement into the free-to-play business model has seen the MMORPG genre strengthen its foothold in the ASEAN online gaming market. With unlimited play times now being available for no cost at all, hardcore gamers have been more inclined to spend more money on virtual items. Service providers (SPs)' strategies in diversifying their virtual item range have seen a strong reaction from the gaming community, with highly customizable items drawing in recurring revenue that eventually overtook the monthly subscription revenue," says Sae-Soon Quah, market analyst, IDC Malaysia.
