Steven Frantzen is a long-time specialist on the IT markets of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). As Managing Director of IDC in the CEMA region, he has been responsible for the planning, development, implementation, and coordination of IDC's research, business, and office development activities in the regions of Central and Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa. As Senior Vice President for EMEA Research, he oversees the development, integration, and planning of IDC's standard research programs and consulting across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
He has managed IDC's operations in CEE for more than 16 years, overseeing office and product development ranging from new country studies and various technology reports to consulting work on vertical markets, telecommunications, software, and services, among others. In 1997, Frantzen was appointed IDC's head of the German-speaking countries, overseeing operations in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, in addition to the CEE region. He was made responsible for the Middle East and Africa in 1999. In the latter half of 2001, Frantzen's management responsibilities returned exclusively to the CEE and MEA regions, now called CEMA by IDC, to focus on opportunities in these fast-growing emerging markets. In 2005, he was appointed general manager of EMEA Research, and received further responsibility for IDC's EMEA-wide consulting operations in 2006.
Frantzen's experience in the field reflects a combination of study, travel, and work activities. He holds a master's from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in Boston, Massachusetts, where his studies focused on international business and trade and Soviet and Eastern European studies. He has also lived and worked for nearly 20 years in Central Europe, with positions in the German Bundestag and the U.S. State Department. He is fluent in German and proficient in Russian and Czech.
