12:00 - 1:00 p.m. U.S. Eastern Time
As the US economy slipped further into recession during 1Q08, the first signs of an IT spending slowdown have materialized. PC shipments in the United States came in below expectations, and the outlook for the next two quarters has deteriorated amidst apparent weakness in the commercial and consumer markets. In every previous IT market downturn on record, a slowdown in PC shipments has foreshadowed the broader impact across other sectors of the tech industry. Are we witnessing the beginning of an overall slump in IT spending, or will other tech markets prove more resilient this time around? Will strength in international markets continue to mitigate the slowdown in North America? And what do the latest macroeconomic indicators tell us about expectations for the second half of 2008?
In this telebriefing, a team of IDC analysts and economists will interpret IT spending trends and indicators from the first quarter of 2008 in the context of an updated outlook for market performance in the next 12 months. New forecasts and survey data will be used to answer questions such as:
- How did the economic slowdown impact PC sales in Q1, and what might this mean for other tech sectors?
- How do we interpret IT vendor financial results for the first quarter, in the context of overall market growth?
- What impact is the US economic slowdown having in Europe and Asia/Pacific?
- Will emerging international markets maintain their current momentum through the rest of 2008?
Session Speakers:
- Stephen Minton, Vice President, Worldwide IT Markets and Strategies
- Anna Toncheva, Program Manager and Economist, Worldwide IT Markets and Strategies
- David Daoud, Research Manager, Personal Systems
- Marcel Warmerdam, Research Director, European IT Markets
