In the first half of 2008, the size of China's IT security market stood at US$439.0 million, of which, the security appliance accounted for the largest share of 44.9%, followed by the security software with 29.4% share and security services with 25.7%. "In order to avoid any possible impact from the Beijing Olympics in the third quarter of 2008, some mainstream vendors moved up some of their projects to the second quarter. This led to better-than-expected revenues for the first half of 2008. The first half of 2008 saw a dramatic drop in the security incidents designed to cause disruption. On the one hand, the destructive malicious codes were more concealed; on the other hand, the malicious codes designed to steal or control increased significantly. The consumers and IT managers had to deal with the ever more security threats that came, among other things, from the vulnerabilities of the third-party software, antivirus software hijacking, phishing sites, and adware," says Jeffery Dong, research manager, IT Security Market Research, IDC China. "In 1H08, the mainstream venders were seen making new moves in the unified threat management (UTM) appliance and intrusion prevention appliance markets. While ensuring their shares in the traditional security market, they put more resources into these two markets," he adds.

Investment and Adoption Plans for Security Solutions, 2008

This IDC study examines the adoption trends of security solutions — software, appliance, and managed service — among organizations in Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) or APEJ region. It highlights the top concerns of organizations when purchasing IT security–related technologies. It also demonstrates the key drivers behind the purchase and adoption of these solutions by country perspective and by industry perspective. Overall, IT security spending across organizations in different countries and industries will continue to increase or at least remain the same from 2007 to 2008. "Organizations with a well in place IT systems and network infrastructures are aware of the importance of security to ensure business operation continuity and to meet the needs of internal stakeholders, partners, and customers. When evaluating security technologies, organizations should evaluate their internal business requirements and take a more holistic framework approach instead of purely implementing event-driven or tactic-basis point products to build their security architecture," says Judy Wu, research manager, Infrastructure Software Research, IDC Asia/Pacific.

2008年 国内セキュリティアプライアンス市場の動向：機能統合の進展

Australia and New Zealand Security Solutions Survey, 2008

This IDC report presents the findings from IDC's Australia and New Zealand Security Survey, 2008. Specifically, 211 Australian and 200 New Zealand organisations were surveyed to identify IT security adoption rates, budget plans, implementation preferences, customer pain points, and where and how customers intend to spend their IT security budgets. IDC predicts that the security market in Australia and New Zealand (ANZ) will continue to experience healthy growth. However, this study shows that security has fallen on the list of CIO top concerns, and the level of security confidence has increased significantly. The survey shows that 63% of Australian and 51% of New Zealand respondents are very or extremely confident in their organisations' level of IT security. However, organisations are still concerned with viruses, spam, spyware, and other malware threats. The survey further shows that organisations have also opened their eyes to other threats such as data leakage and internal threats. Main security challenges include budget constraints, lack of skilled staff and user awareness, and managing security complexity. "Whilst the survey shows that ANZ organisations have grown more confident in the security of their organisations, they will continue to invest to ensure the security posture is maintained, and good growth opportunities still exist for both product and service providers (SPs) in the ANZ market," says Patrik Bihammar, senior analyst, Security Solutions, IDC Australia and New Zealand.

McAfee Gets More Secure

This IDC Flash analyzes McAfee's acquisition of Secure Computing that was announced on September 22, 2008. The intent of the content is to assist security marketers and sales account managers in fine-tuning approaches to the Canadian buyer. Segmented data is provided to highlight the differences and similarities between organization size, industry verticals, and the IT versus line-of-business (LOB) decision-maker comparisons. Although we hear a lot about breaches both domestically and globally, where millions of records containing personal data have been lost or stolen, the Canadian mindset towards security has shifted only slightly. Organizations in this country are feeling pretty good about the defenses that they have in place at the present time. This means that marketers and account managers have to be creative — and likely spend more time on developing opportunities. There are short-term approaches that can deliver results now (e.g., capitalize on fear), but the longer-term approach (e.g., becoming the trusted advisor) is advisable too.

McAfee to Acquire Secure Computing

This IDC Flash discusses McAfee's announced intention to acquire Secure Computing, a provider of network security solutions.

Symantec Sends a Clear Message — It Is Serious About Software as a Service

This IDC Flash discusses Symantec's announcement of its intention to acquire MessageLabs, a leading provider of hosted messaging security services.

国内通信事業者のセキュリティサービス市場 2007年の分析と2008年～2012年の予測

Worldwide Network Security 2008–2012 Forecast and 2007 Vendor Shares: Transitions — Appliances Are More Than Meets the Eye

This IDC study provides a top-down sizing of the network security market, which consists of the firewall/VPN, unified threat management (UTM), and intrusion detection and prevention (IDP), virtual private network (VPN) technology markets. During 2007, network security solutions ignored the slowing economy and continued to grow and transition to new technologies increased. The document provides vendor shares for 2007 and a segmented 2008–2012 forecast for this market. "The network security market is undergoing a variety of transitions within the subsegments and is still growing despite slowing economies worldwide. As UTM and IDP devices continue to gain market share on the former Goliath — firewall/VPN — XTM solutions are already moving past the capabilities of UTM appliances with networking and management features. In the VPN sector, ease and innovation are also pushing out IPsec solutions, the incumbent VPN product, says Andrew J. Hanson, associate research analyst at IDC. "Network security products remain popular because they offer comprehensive security with strong performance advantages and convenience to customers. Network security vendors will need to integrate better performance, management, and networking functionality with strong security architecture to remain competitive in a market that is seeing more comprehensive solutions taking hold in larger businesses."
