IDC set out to uncover the reactions of Generation Y toward wireless printing. The discussions among the young professionals were aimed toward understanding the extent of existing print options, need for printing, attitude toward integrating printing into their wireless environments, concerns, and future expectations. "Generation Y represents the current and future user group of IT in more ways than one. IDC's focus group discussions brought to the fore some of the gaping holes in wireless printing as it stands today. It came as no surprise then that going forward, wireless presents itself one of the key opportunity areas for print vendors to work on, while giving Generation Y much to look forward to in their otherwise burgeoning wireless world," said Sahaja Sarathy, senior research analyst, U.S. Hardcopy Peripherals.

Top 10 States in U.S. Support Services Spending (November 6, 2008)

The U.S. Black Book (IDC #212875) is IDC's quarterly analysis of the status and projected growth of the IT industry in 50 states and across 15 vertical markets. The first Quick Poll was conducted in May, while the second Quick Poll was conducted in September. The new findings demonstrate a growing pessimism in the market, including a higher percentage of respondents indicating that the economy is impacting their hardcopy spending, a lower percentage of respondents indicating a projected increase in the 2009 hardcopy budget, a higher percentage of respondents indicating a projected decrease in the 2009 hardcopy budget, more interest in tools used to cut costs on hardcopy spending, and longer timeframe projected for an economic recovery.

Ricoh Is "Leading the REVolution" at the National Dealer Meeting

This IDC Insight reviews Ricoh's Vision 2008 dealer meeting held in Orlando, Florida. The following are IDC's key observations regarding Lexmark's expanded portfolio: Enhanced laser products. The new line of Lexmark printers and MFPs have been enhanced with faster speeds, smaller size, and integrated duplexing. The new color and monochrome laser products give Lexmark a greater presence in the 21–30ppm color laser printer/MFP, 31–44ppm monochrome laser printer, and 45–69ppm monochrome laser printer/MFP speed segments. Wireless printing capabilities. All of Lexmark's new devices come equipped with wireless printing capabilities. IDC believes that the interest in wireless printing is growing in the low- and mid-level market with a wide adoption of wireless networks. Consumables rewards program. A primary inhibitor to the color laser printer/MFP market has been the increasing consumer awareness of the cost of consumables. Originally geared toward inkjet users, Lexmark expanded its reward program to include its new color laser devices (C540 series and X543/X544 series). Customers can earn free high-yield toner and imaging kits by returning used cartridges to Lexmark for recycling or reuse. A new toner cartridge package includes all of the necessary ingredients for a simplified return process: the toner's original box, prepaid mailing labels, and return instructions.

New Zealand Hardcopy Peripherals 2008–2012 Forecast: A New Zealand Barometer of the Printing and Imaging Market

This IDC study seeks to analyze the dynamics amongst different printing and imaging technologies — laser and inkjet, copier and printer, multifunction (MF) and single-function (SF), and monochrome and colour — and how they are likely to shape the future dynamics of the New Zealand peripherals market. Included are descriptions of trends currently operating and developing; significant year-over year (YoY) growth in some markets; falling prices; slowing of revenue growth in some markets; the decline of average selling prices (ASPs); and the compromise of profit margins. Discussion also involves the downward merging of price brackets across technologies as the multifunction devices (MFDs) close the price gap on their SF counterparts in the inkjet space and challenges with product differentiation across technologies. In reference to a recent study in Australasia, this report includes the likelihood that the channels to market in New Zealand are soon to receive greater attention, pointing out the rising intensity in the low and midrange markets amongst other things to look out for in the near future. "With the convergence of technology well underway across a variety of electronics industries, the printing and imaging industry is not an exception. Formerly where SF devices generally dominated all peripheral markets, these have given way to devices that are capable of performing a variety of functions. By year-end 2007, the ASP of an inkjet MFD had completely closed the gap on inkjet SF devices, (NZ$195 and NZ$196, respectively). The swift and impressive rise of inkjet MFDs, driven in part by the pull of the consumer segment with more demand for features such as colour, and partly by the push and ability of vendors to offer cheaper prices, are the main reasons for the growth as well as the equally swift cannibalisation of SF inkjet printers. Former existing price brackets have disbanded, and just as we are seeing convergence in technology devices, so too have price brackets somewhat converged. This in turn is likely

Hardcopy Peripherals Update: Period Ending October 24, 2008

This IDC update provides a summary of product and corporate announcements affecting the hardcopy peripheral environments during the period ending October 24, 2008.

Top 10 States in U.S. Implementation Spending (October 30, 2008)

The U.S. Black Book (IDC #212875) is IDC's quarterly analysis of the status and projected growth of the IT industry in 50 states and across 15 vertical markets.
